OLD PEOPLE
Old
people do have a sense of humour and the good news is
that ageing does not affect our emotional responses to
humour and we will still enjoy a good laugh when we get
the joke. There are many styles/types of humour and everyone
has their favourite be that Irony, Slapstick, Black humour
- dealing with the unpleasant or dark side of life, Satire
or Farce. Some types of humour make fun of particular
groups, e.g. politicians, women and different nationalities,
whilst others make fun of taboo subjects such as death,
sex, bodily functions, religion and beliefs. But whatever
the sense of humour, thank goodness old people don't lose
it as they grow older.

OLD PEOPLE
People age 65 and older consume more prescription
and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines than any other
age group. Old people tend to have more long-term,
chronic illnesses--such as arthritis, diabetes,
high blood pressure and heart disease--than do younger
people. Because they may have a number of diseases
or disabilities at the same time, it is common for
old people to take many different drugs.
When prescribed and taken appropriately, drugs have
many benefits: They treat diseases and infections,
help manage symptoms of chronic conditions, and
can contribute to an improved quality of life. But
medicines can also cause problems, and the medical
and physical needs of old people can sometimes make
being aware of potential problems especially important.
Of all the problems old people face in taking medication,
drug interactions are possibly the most dangerous.
When two or more drugs are mixed in the body, they
may interact with each other and produce uncomfortable
or even dangerous side effects.
This is especially
a problem for old people because they are much more
likely to take more than one drug. The average old
person is taking more than four prescription medications
at once plus two over-the-counter medications.

Interesting note...
OLD PEOPLE
According to ABCNews: July 15, 2004 - Anthropologists
Rachel Caspari and Sang-Hee Lee were astounded when they
saw the numbers. After spending years studying fossilised
teeth in museums around the world they were finally able
to document one of the most dramatic turning points in
the history of human evolution. About 32,000 years ago,
the researchers found, human longevity took a giant leap
upward. In fact, the number of old people surviving more
than quadrupled during what may have been a relatively
brief period of time.
Why that happened is still a bit of a mystery, although
the researchers have their hunches. But the consequences
are clear. Population size grew dramatically, and with
more and more old people around, with a bit of wisdom
and experience, new ideas began to emerge.
Population reached a "critical mass," as Caspari
puts it, and from all those old people sitting around
the campfire sharing ideas, modern humans began to emerge.
It was not just evolution. It was revolution. This old
planet would never be the same again.
