Huge spike in excess winter deaths sounds deafening wake-up call

It is a national scandal that the UK has more older people dying in winter compared to the rest of the year than countries with more severe weather.

Health timebomb hits baby boomers
Over-60s suffer more illnesses caused by bad diet and lack of exercise

They were the first to enjoy free health care, and had the time of their lives in the Swinging Sixties.

But the post-war 'baby boomers' are now paying the price.
Today's 60-year-olds are the first modern generation to be less healthy than their immediate predecessors. more

Press release

Age Concern and Help the Aged respond to Conservative plans to retain vital benefits for older people (19.11.09)
Andrew Harrop Head of Public Policy for Age Concern and Help the Aged said:

We welcome the Conservatives' announcement today that they would not remove Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance in the future.

These benefits can improve older peoples quality of life and provide extra help which may prevent or delay the need for more formal care. We know that older people use these benefits to help them cope with all the additional costs that come with disability such as higher food and heating bills not just to pay for care services.

Attendance Allowance is especially important for older people as it provides a flexible non-means-tested national entitlement which promotes independence in later life. For a disabled person it can also provide a passport to additional support through other means-tested benefits.

Recent weeks have seen a flurry of announcements from the parties about different aspects of the care system but fundamental reform of the entire care and support system is still urgently needed. We now call on all the political parties to set out definitive plans for reforming the system ahead of the next General Election so that older people their families and carers can judge whether their proposals will deliver the high quality care older people desperately need.

*Holidays

Don't feel guilty about being kind to yourself - take a holiday. You need to give yourself time to relax, and to engage in activities that you find rewarding. It is sensible, not self indulgent to look after your self in this way. Doing things you have to do all the time has a negative effect on your emotional health. As well as the fact that a holiday or trip can renew the strength required to carry on in the face of difficult circumstances.

There is a vast choice of cheap holidays in 2007 on offer using the internet and there is something for everybody..Just click here to browse further

This month's funny..

Better watch what you ask retired people

Yesterday I was at my local

CO-OP buying a large bag of Purina dog food for my loyal pet

and was in the checkout queue when a woman behind me asked

if I had a dog.

What did she think I had, an elephant? So, since I'm

retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that

no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet

again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I

ended up in hospital last time, but that I'd lost 2

stones before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming

out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that

the way that it works is to load your pockets with Purina

nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel

hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well

and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here

that practically everyone in queue was now enthralled with

my story.) Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in

intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her

no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's arse

and a car hit us both.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart

attack he was laughing so hard.

I'm now banned from the Co-op.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the

time in the world to think of daft things to say.
