The government is planning to scrap the default retirement age in the UK from October 2011.

Under the proposal, employers would not be allowed to dismiss staff because they had reached the age of 65.

Activists, who have long campaigned against the rule, welcomed the proposal as a "victory" against ageism.

Currently, an employer can force an employee to retire at the age of 65 without paying any financial compensation. more

Oh dear....I feel for the younger one's who are going to find it even harder to find a job now many elderly people won't necesarily be giving up their position for somebody else. There will be older people who just carry on working for something to do rather than the financial need and this will stop many younger people getting those jobs. :(

If this goes through, I can forsee a lot of legal battles taking place.

As I've mentioned in another thread somewhere, many contracts of employment already stipulate that the contract ends on the employees' 65th birthday. The employee, having signed the contract has agreed to this. Then, to carry on working beyond this time can only be by mutual agreement.

I've not followed the discussion intensely so I've not heard what the Trade Unions have said to this. They usually fight to reduce the retiring age, but must also respond to their members' wishes. In some jobs, the 65th birthday can't come soon enough!
