Almost eight out of ten older people who use personal call alarms1 rely on friends‚ family and commercial paid support to help out with everyday basic care tasks such as shopping‚ cleaning and DIY in order to live independently‚ according to new research from Age Concern and Help the Aged.

According to the charity’s new survey2‚ six out of ten respondents feel local councils are not doing enough to help older people stay in their own homes. Over the years‚ home care services have been increasingly restricted and most local councils only provide care to those who meet the highest criteria‚ leaving many older people without the basic care they need to lead independent and dignified lives.

The snapshot survey shows almost six out of ten respondents regularly receive help from friends and family with shopping‚ and more than a quarter receive help with household chores. more

When I read the full report, it said that only around 30% of the questionaires were returned and not all questions answered. Is that really representative?

Next thing, isn't it actually a human reaction for friends and family to help those in need? Our loved ones?
Isn't it actually comforting to be helped by friends and family, so long that is humanly and humanely possible? Or would you sooner have this contracted out to strangers? Would that ease your concience? There comes a point when that may be neccessary, but until that day comes, can't we do our little bit?

The government isn't doing this, the council isn't doing that. Moans here,
moans there. This is a problem that is quite easy to solve.

Increase the council tax threefold! Then there'd be something to belly-ache about.

The elderly need help, the young need help, the disabled need help etc., etc., the list is endless, but the people who want this help only see what's going on in their own particular field. True, or not?

So, friends and family! What are we here for? Isn't 'Job satisfaction' somtimes worth more than the money?

You know, everybody wants to go back to nature.

But nobody wants to walk there!
