Researchers at the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease in San Francisco have found what may be an important key in unlocking a cure for Alzheimer's disease, according to the BBC.

The protein EphB2 is responsible for regulating nerve signals in the brain and helping memory. Those with forms of dementia have lower amounts of it, so scientists hypothesized that by artificially increasing EphB2 levels, they could reverse symptoms of Alzheimer's.

The gene therapy was tested on mice who were bred to have a condition that is similar to the mental illness. When they were given additional EphB2 proteins, their memory problems were eliminated.

"We think that blocking amyloid proteins from binding to EphB2, and enhancing EphB2 levels or functions with drugs might be of benefit in Alzheimer's Disease," study leader Lennart Mucke told the news provider.

Experts agree that this is a valuable discovery that helps researchers understand the way Alzheimer's affects the brain.

The Alzheimer's Association states that there are currently 5.3 million Americans suffering from the condition. The Amarillo Globe-News estimates that there will be approximately 16 million Americans with the disease by 2050.
