Ministers are urging at-risk patients, including those aged over 65, to get the seasonal flu jab after figures revealed a decline in the number of people having the injection.

The Department of Health admitted that some patients may have been put off having the jab by 'unnecessary' concerns over its swine flu component.

At the end of October, 48% of over-65s had been given the jab - compared with 54% a year previously.

A statement from the department said the 'blip' may have been caused by milder weather this season or people 'being unnecessarily concerned about the jab containing swine flu vaccine' after fears were raised in 2009 about the safety of the vaccine.

Professor David Salisbury, director of immunisation at the Department of Health, added: 'We don't know how serious flu will be this winter.

'But we do know that improving seasonal flu vaccine uptake will ensure that more vulnerable people are protected.

'This year's vaccine is the ordinary seasonal flu jab and protects against the dominant strains.

'This year it protects against three types of flu, including the type known as swine flu.

'It is vital we don't underestimate the effects of this virus. It is not the same as getting a cold and it can seriously affect your health.'

Right on, boy.

By the way, is that your real name or is it a trade union?
