One in three retirees say they finished working at the suggestion of their boss or because they had reached the 'normal' retirement age at the company for which they worked, a survey conducted by Aviva suggests.

The Government's abolition of the Default Retirement Age in April next year is expected to increase the number of workers who delay their retirement or wind down their work activity by shifting to part-time hours.

Aviva said three fifths of workers over 55 are reducing the number of hours worked. Others take up less stressful jobs, such as turning a hobby into an activity from which they can make money.

Again, around three fifths of people do not want to work in their current job once they get to the State Pension Age.

Some people are still likely to be forced to give up work because of ill-health.

One in five people retire because of chronic or age-related health conditions, while 11% stop work because they are made redundant and think they are too old to look for a new job, the survey finds.
