Why dental implants are the best

solution for missing teeth

Dental implants are becoming a more popular solution for replacing missing teeth. Prices have fallen over the last decade meaning more and more patients are having them fitted in the UK.

As they pay quite well, more and more dentists are investing in the specialised training required to fit them resulting in increased patient choice. Also more manufacturers now have the knowledge to produce titanium implants resulting again in more options and lower prices. These factors mean more and more patients are having dental implants fitted in the UK.

Whilst prices have fallen in recent making them more attractive to patients, they are still not a treatment course subsidised by the NHS, and are significantly more expensive than dentures or bridges. Whilst an inferior way of replacing missing teeth, dentures and bridges are a lot cheaper whether fitted privately or by an NHS dentist so you have to ask yourself are they worth the extra spend?

This post aims to help you make that decision by outlining the advantages of implants over other methods of replacing teeth by setting out the advantages of implants. Here are the advantages of dental implants:

" Permanent replacement - unlike dentures and crowns, dental implants are a permanent replacement for missing teeth. Once they settle in your alveolar ridge (gum tissue) it is unlikely they will need to be replaced. They can be left in for eating and will improve your bite making it easier to eat steaks and tougher to chew food.

" Easy to maintain - dental implants are easy to maintain. They are cared for in the same way as existing teeth. You do not need to take them out to clean like dentures.

" Shape your face - one of the little thought of advantages of teeth is that they help to maintain the shape of your face. Teeth act as anchors in your gum tissue which helps to maintain the shape of your gums, cheeks and the rest of your face. Once the teeth are missing your gums will being to recede which will eventually cause your face to take on a sunken appearance. Dental implants will stop this from happening.

" Do not damage your existing teeth - bridges are fixed to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. They put pressure on and can damage the supporting teeth which will not become apparent until your need to have the bridge removed. It seems a bit ridiculous to damage your existing teeth to fill a gap in your mouth. With dental implants, there should be no detrimental effects to your existing teeth.

Clearly dental implants are superior method of teeth replacement. You need to consider if their benefits justify the extra cost involved. In the UK implants are available from £995 but you can expect to pay a little more to get a good surgeon in your area. Bridges and dentures are both available as band 3 treatments on the NHS which currently costs £214.
