Petition Launched In Supportof Compulsory Scooter Insurance |
|
A government petition has been launched as part of a campaign to make comprehensive insurance compulsory for Britain's mobility scooter users. There are now 300,000 mobility scooters in the UK, up from 70,000 only five years ago, a significant rise which has brought with it new issues.
Thefts and vandalism of scooters are increasingly common occurrences,
as are collisions and accidents. The team Help-My-Mobility.org
- the website that launched the campaign - feel that this growth
in scooter numbers is a positive development, as long as it
is appropriately managed;
"The rise in scooter ownership figures is great news, as it
means that more and more people are experiencing the life-changing
benefits that these machines can bring," said Jason Tate, Help
My Mobility's managing director.
"However, as numbers grow, it is important for the government
to recognise the changing landscape of the mobility equipment
industry. We've heard stories of people being left housebound
following vandalism or theft of a scooter, or even of people
being forced to sell their home because of legal costs after
a collision."
"These tragic consequences are so easily avoided," he continued.
"The introduction of compulsory mobility scooter insurance would
put an end to situations like these."
